As an Illinois Department of Transportation truck attempted to retrieve a car involved in an earlier accident another vehicle struck the IDOT truck. The truck was blocking a lane of traffic on the Dan Ryan Expressway as it worked to collect the vehicle.
According to Illinois State Police the IDOT worker, or "minuteman", sustained minor injuries. The driver of the car was more seriously hurt, though his injuries were said to be non life-threatening.
Police believe that the Chicago accident will "most likely" lead to the arrest of the injured driver. The driver who caused the accident is believed to have been impaired at the time. Investigation by the Illinois State Police is ongoing.
The injured IDOT worker is part of the Emergency Traffic Patrol program. The program dispatches teams of emergency workers and drivers to help clear traffic accidents, potential safety problems caused by accidents, disabled vehicles or hazardous debris on busy sections of Illinois interstates.
First responders such as IDOT workers and minutemen, police officers, EMT's and firefighters are often at risk as they respond to accidents.
The Chicago injury attorneys at Hupy & Abraham hope that those injured in the accident recover fully and quickly from their injuries.
