Governor Declares May to be Motorcycle Safety Month in Wisconsin

Posted on May 12, 2011

Wauwatosa Patch reports that motorcycle season has officially commenced in Wisconsin, where Governor Scott Walker has designated the month of May as Motorcycle Awareness and Safety Month. Rocketing fuel prices have spurred many drivers to switch to motorcycles, which typically have superior gas mileage ratios than cars - in fact, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, nearly half a million Wisconsin motorists have motorcycle licenses or permits.

Greg Patzer, manager of Wisconsin's Motorcycle Safety Program, urged caution and cooperation between motorists and motorcyclists. "To prevent crashes, motorists need to share the road and watch for motorcycles in traffic, especially at intersections and while making turns or lane changes."

Although motorcycles account for only about 7% of all registered vehicles in Wisconsin, they account for nearly 17% of highway fatalities. Patzer expressed concern over these figures. In the last five years, he cited, there have been approximately 2,500 injuries and 100 motorcyclist fatalities that might have been avoided if motorists and motorcyclists were better trained about how to effectively and safely share the road.

To meet the rising need for formal motorcyclist training, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has unveiled the latest addition to its ZERO IN WISCONSIN program aimed at decreasing the number of auto-related fatalities:  THE REF. Short for "Transportable High-End Rider Education Facility," THE REF is a mobile training station that educates riders and non-riders about motorist awareness, avoiding accidents, and sharing the road.

A Wisconsin accident can impact more than just your short-term health. Motorcyclists have an increased risk of sustaining serious injuries, which may require hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical expenses and lost wages. If a negligent motorist or rider caused your accident, you shouldn't have to shoulder these substantial expenses.
