The U.S. Transportation Department recently reported that last year 5,474 traffic deaths were caused by distracted drivers. In addition, distracted driving accounted for 448,000 injuries- 24,000 of which involved cell phone use. Though these numbers are a concern, safety officials, such as Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, know that the actual numbers of injuries and deaths caused by distracted driving are actually much higher.
In many states police do not check to see if distraction was a factor in the accident. According to LaHood the current figures are "only the tip of the iceberg because police reports in many states and communities do not routinely document whether distraction was a factor in vehicle crashes."
Though there are many possible distractions to drivers, cell phone use is concerning to police and safety officials in Wisconsin and across the nation. According to LaHood sending just one e-mail or text message while driving at 55 mph is like, "driving the length of a football field while blindfolded."
Our law firm has seen too many people, especially bikers, injured or killed by a distracted driver. Please, take the time and have the consideration to put the phone down and drive. If you must talk, find a safe place to pull off the road to do so. Together we can work to make the roads of Wisconsin and Illinois safer for all motorists.
