In 2011, CNNMoney reported that General Motors posted its fifth consecutive profitable quarter; netting in excess of $3 billion for the first quarter of 2011, but more attention is being paid to a recall targeting about 150,000 of their top selling 2011 Chevrolet Cruze.

As gas prices soar, the Chevy Cruze has become a hot seller for consumers seeking refuge from costly, frequent visits to the pump.

GM's 2011 recall of Chevry Cruzes comes in three parts. The first targets 128,911 Cruzes for potential issues with the installation of the bolt that attaches the steering gear input shaft to the steering shaft. If the two became separated, the car could lose steering control, posing a serious hazard to Cruze drivers and motorists sharing the road with them, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
GM claims that only one report of the shafts actually separating has been received and that no crashes resulted from the separation.

The second recall identifies automatic transmission concerns in certain models of the 2011 Cruze and will affect about 100,300 vehicles. The NHTSA reported that the shift lever in these models might falsely indicate that a car was in park, when in fact it might not be, creating a crash risk for unsuspecting drivers who leave a car that might roll away.

The third leg of the recalls targets approximately 7,500 of the 2011 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savanas; the right rear brake hoses have the tendency to rub against the tire, which could open a hole in the brake line and compromise the integrity of the rear brakes.

In 2012 the Recalls Continued

General Motors recalled the Chevy Cruze for engine fire risks in 2012. If the compact car was American-made between September 2010 and May 2012, GM will contact those owners with more information about the recall, safety and free repairs available at their local Chevy dealers, beginning July 11.

According to this recall, fires start due to fluid dripping on the plastic shield below the engine and occur mostly when oil is not properly cleaned up during changes. There are 30 known fires from this problem but no reported injuries. Two extreme cases of burning that resulted in destroying the cars have been reported to federal safety officials.
