Meridia (Sibutramine)

Merida is the name brand used in the United States for the diet drug sibutramine. The drug has been prescribed, along with a reduced-calorie diet, to help overweight patients lose weight and keep it from returning. The drug works by increasing the activity of chemicals that, when released by the brain, aid in weight loss. The drug is only available by prescription.

Please read on to learn more about Meridia and its safety as a diet aid.

  • Drug reactions- The Mayo Clinic has listed many drugs that may interact poorly with Meridia. Though the full list is available here, some examples include: amphetamine, nialamide, phenelzine and rasagiline. Please ensure that you always disclose all current medications to your doctor before you start any new prescription drug regimen.
  • Medical problems- Before taking Meridia, your doctor should do a thorough examination and ensure that you have no medical issues that would put you at greater risk for a heart attack or stroke. Some of the many medical problems that may affect the use of Meridia include: angina, coronary artery disease, heart attack or rhythm problems and a history of strokes.
  • Precautions- This prescription drug must be taken only when a doctor is sure that you are not at risk of any of the very serious possible complications. Meridia may cause pulmonary hypertension, dizziness, drowsiness, trouble in thinking or poor judgment. Any skin rash, hives or allergic reaction should be discussed with your doctor immediately. Other side effects include: achiness, chills, fast or irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, mental depression, painful menstruation, swelling of the body, feet or ankles, convulsions, excessive bleeding following injury, headache or unusual weight gain.
  • Reporting side effects- If you have any of the listed side effects, or any other side effects you need to speak with your physician immediately. In addition, it is wise to report any side effects to the FDA. Their toll-free number is 1.800.FDA.1088.
If you believe that you have suffered from a heart attack or stroke while taking Meridia, there may be something you can do.
