What is the law in Wisconsin regarding child safety seats?

A:

The following statutes are applicable in Wisconsin:

  • Children must be in a car seat until they reach age 4 and in a booster seat until they reach age 8.
  • If less than 1 year old, or weighing less than 20 lbs. children must be in a rear-facing child seat in the back;
  • From age 1 to age 4, or weighing less than 40 lbs., a child must be in a forward-facing child seat in the back;
  • From age 4 to age 8, weighing between 40 and 80 lbs. and not taller than 57 inches, a child must be in a booster seat.

A child booster seat is a child passenger restraint system that meets the federal standards and is designed to elevate the child from the vehicle seat to allow the safety belt (lap and shoulder) to be properly positioned over the child's body.

The most important things to remember about child restraint systems is that you should only buy safety seats that meet federal standards, and you should always make sure the safety or booster seat is properly secured to the car seat, and the child is properly buckled up.
