Cobaltism can be traced to metal hip joints when the joint rubs on itself, causing the release of cobalt into the bloodstream and tissues.  In excessive levels, cobalt can cause symptoms such as:

• Ringing ears (tinnitus)
• Vertigo
• Deafness
• Blindness
• Confusion
• Headaches
• Convulsions
• Cardiomyopathy
• Hypothyroidism

Though only a few patients have been found to have cobalt poisoning linked to their hip replacement, doctors worry that this may be due to underreported symptoms and a lack of connection between the neurological symptoms and the hip replacement.
