Last month, the FDA announced a new proposed rule that would require medical device manufacturers to include unique tracking codes on most of their medical device products. These tracking codes, known as unique device identifiers, would be entered into a publicly accessible database. The proposed rule has entered the comment stage. A final FDA rule is expected by next summer.
