Your car has a unique vehicle identification number, your child’s stroller has a unique barcode that you can register, and many other consumer goods have similar systems that allow direct notification to consumers if a product is recalled. Right now medical devices do not have unique identification numbers that make such recall notices possible. However, that may soon change.
FDA Proposes New Medical Device Identification System
Last month, the FDA announced a new proposed rule that would require medical device manufacturers to include unique tracking codes on most of their medical device products. These tracking codes, known as unique device identifiers, would be entered into a publicly accessible database. It is thought that this system would allow doctors and patients to know about identified risks earlier and that it would allow hospitals to pull dangerous products earlier.
The proposed rule has entered the comment stage. A final FDA rule is expected by next summer.
