It is important to wear your motorcycle helmet every time that you get on your bike. Helmets have been proven to help save lives and to lower the incidents of traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries among motorcycle accident victims regardless of when an accident occurs.
Is There a Weekend Effect?
However, recent medical studies suggest that it is especially important to wear your helmet on weekends. Specifically, a Johns Hopkins study published in the August 2012 Journal of Surgical Research found that adults who suffered head trauma on weekends were 14 percent more likely to die than adults who suffered head trauma on weekdays. The study concluded that there was no medical reason for a higher mortality rate and that future studies should look into why the death rate is higher on weekends.
One reason suggested by the study may be the way in which hospitals are staffed on weekends compared to how they are staffed on weekdays. While there is still a debate as to whether there is a “weekend effect” that results in a lower quality of healthcare on Saturdays and Sundays then during the week, the results of this study suggest that it is a good idea to wear your helmet and protect yourself from head trauma.
