Many in the motorcycle community believe that the answer is no. 49-year-old Lora Hunt hit Anita Zaffke while the biker was stopped at a red light. Hunt was paying more attention to her fingernail polish than to the road when she struck Zaffke from behind. Data retrieved from her car showed that Hunt was traveling at 50 mph and did not slow at all before the crash.
Bikers from across the nation believe that the sentencing in this terrible case does not reflect the seriousness of the accident. After only a two day trial and a few hours of deliberation, Hunt was sentenced to 18 months of periodic imprisonment. This means that Hunt will spend her days out of jail, only reporting at night. Probation and community service are also part of her sentence.
Our law firm has worked hard and spent over $100,000 in Illinois and Wisconsin trying to get motorists to "Watch for Motorcycles". Yet all this work means nothing when drivers continue to pay more attention to their phones, their radios, even their nails than they do the road.
Our attorneys will continue to offer our support to the Zaffke family. We hope that through advocacy and motorcycle awareness the memory of Anita will live on forever.
