Traffic Safety is Vital as School Begins in Wisconsin

Traffic safety around schools and school buses is crucial.  Over the summer many of us have gotten out of the habit of looking for children and driving with school buses.  To this end the Wisconsin State Patrol has chosen to highlight traffic safety as it pertains to school children on their way to and from school.  These traffic safety tips and laws include:

  • Stop for School Buses- Wisconsin law mandates that motorists stop a minimum of 20 feet from a stopped school bus with its red warning lights flashing. Drivers should stop regardless of which side of the road the bus is stopped on unless on a divided highway. Violators will be charged a fine of $326.50 with four demerit points.
  • Students Walking to School- Drivers must yield to pedestrians who: have started crossing an intersection or crosswalk on a walk signal or green light, are crossing the road within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection and are crossing a sidewalk or entering an ally or driveway. Drivers who fail to yield will be fined between $175 and $232 along with four demerit points.

The accident attorneys at Hupy & Abraham hope that you will do your best to drive carefully, especially around schools and family areas.  We must all be vigilant when it comes to protecting the safety of our children.
