Deer, in an attempt to flee hunters and look for food in the morning and evening hours, are hitting the highway. Not that they mean to commute this way; it's often the only way to get food and seek shelter.
What this means for drivers and motorcyclists in Wisconsin is extra vigilance when driving just about anywhere. More and more, even city street are the sites of car/deer accidents. As populations grow and open space shrinks the hooved creatures try just about anything to stay safe and find food. However, the road, be it highway or city street, is never a safe bet for deer.
According to Lt. Mark Rupnik of the Sheboygan Co. Sheriff's Department deer accidents always increase in the late fall/early winter. However, November has already proved to be dangerous for both deer and motorists.
"We always know it's a seasonal thing, at some point in the fall we're going to have a rash of car deer accidents. Since the 12th, I've counted 22 deer car crashes," said Rupnik.
As motorcycle and car accident attorneys we want to help you avoid any and all accidents. When dealing with deer this season be sure to keep an eyes not just directly in front of you but on the shoulder as well. Evening and morning are prime times for deer movement so be extra vigilant during these times, watching for the gleam of eyes or movement alongside the road. If despite your watchful eye the deer causes an accident be sure to move as far from the road as possible before stopping. You do not want the deer to cause a dangerous chain reaction accident.
Be safe out there Wisconsin. Watch for deer and keep your eyes on the road.
