It is summer, and teens across Iowa are ready to enjoy their school-free days. Parents may be less excited. The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is the deadliest time of year for drivers ages 16 through 19.
Traffic experts believe the increase in teen accident fatalities during June, July, and August is a result of more free time, less parental supervision, and relaxed curfews.
You can’t be there every moment. It may be summer, but you still have to work. A parent-teen driving contract can help make your expectations clear.
Our Cedar Rapids accident lawyers have provided this sample parent-teen driving agreement:
I, ________________, will follow the rules of the road. I will drive carefully and show respect to drivers, pedestrians, and others on the road.
I will always wear my seat belt. I will make sure all my passengers are buckled up before starting the car.
I will not exceed the speed limit.
I will not race.
I will obey all stop lights, stop signs and other traffic control devices.
